Volvo Ocean Race
DUTCH & ENGLISH language interview with Bouwe Bekking, in Plymouth, at the start of stage three of Volvo Ocean Race's leg zero. Bekking commenting on New Zealand sailing star, Peter Burling, joining his Volvo Ocean Race team.
New Zealand sailing hero Peter Burling won the 34th America’s Cup for New Zealand in a hotly contested final against the USA team in Bermuda in June this year, is now stepping up to take on the Volvo Ocean Race.
Bouwe Bekking quotes:
“Of course it’s nice that we can announce that Peter Burling as an official team member of Team Brunel. I think all sailors know who Peter Burling is, but I think for the non-sailors that’s a big part of the public as well.
“He’s one of the most talented sailors in the world, winning an Olympic gold in Rio and obviously he’s just won the America’s Cup. He’s a huge addition for our team.
“I think other teams contacted him as well and we’ve been very open and relaxed about it – he seems to be a very relaxed guy as well so he picked us, and that’s fantastic news.
“He is superb driver – one of the fastest ¬– and I think he will adapt very quickly, but I think as well his way of thinking and that’s the way we try to run the campaign. We always try to get as much input as possible from the sailors.
“He joins us for the next two legs of Leg Zero. I’ve never sailed with him before, we just met before in Gosport befre the Fastnet Race start, and we had a good chat over there – I got him a ride on Nikata for the Race because we already had our team together for the Fastnet.”
